"Y'know," you start to reply, but all that comes out is a dry rasping, so you swallow, take a breath and try again. "Y'know, when you bend over like that, I can see right down your top."

"Wha--!?" Instantly, she's standing up straight, arms wrapped around herself protectively (with the unintended effect of pushing her breasts together, making them stand out even more), staring at you with that oh-so-cute blush of hers. Then, just as suddenly, she's bent over double again, hands still clutching her sides, red-faced this time from laughter. It takes a second for it to actually come out, but when it does, boy, does it. Great, whooping intakes of breath, exploding out in bursts so loud, you'd swear you could hear the dirty dishes behind you rattling if you could hear anything else. The heavy atmosphere between you vanishes. You'd have been slow to gues such a girlish frame would even be capable of producing laughter like this. It's impossible not to get caught up in it yourself, although yours is definitely less boisterous and, perhaps, a little more nervous.

After a minute, she seems to be calming down enough for you to get a word in edgewise. "Hey, come on," you say, still grinning, "even I didn't think it was THAT funny."

"Oh... oh, I know," Sanae gasps out. "It was just... such a 'you' thing to say, Ku-chan..." As soon as she's said this, her laughter dies down and her eyes turn back to the floor, lost in thought. Eventually, she speaks again, very quietly. "Chulainn. This... I don't know if this makes any sense or not, but I've... never had anyone I didn't consider family as close to me as you've become. And I've only known you a day." A day? Holy shit, she's right. So much has been happening, it's somehow felt a lot longer than that, but... "I honestly don't know much about how this sort of thing is supposed to work, but it feels to me like... it's moving too fast. I can't keep up, and I don't know what to do, and... that's why..."

That's why. You think you understand enough, now. In two short steps, you're standing in front of her with a hand on each shoulder. "Hey. Apology accepted, Sanae. Don't worry about it."

She looks up at you in silent gratitude, her smile breaking through the clouds and pushing them away. You smile back down at her, and the two of you stand there, smiling at each other, for what seems like a blissful eternity. Alas, the moment comes when the spell must be broken. "Are you going back to bed?"

You let your hands drop back to your sides before replying. "No, I feel pretty rested, actually." Your stomach gurgles quietly. "I could use some breakfast, though."

"Yeah, well," Sanae frowns around you at the pile on the table, "everything we have is dirty at the moment. And I do mean everything. Tell you what: you help me out with those, and I'll fix you something as soon as there's a clear space."

"And then we can wash the dishes I use again when I'm done? Sounds fair. You wash, I'll dry?" She nods, and you move around her to start on the plate she just set down, picking up a nearby towel. "Looks like I missed quite the party," you start off conversationally, echoing your earlier line of thought.

"Yeah. I guess the negotiations went well, we've got a place to live in exchange for a few divine favors, so Kanako held a housewarming party. Invited anyone up from the mountain who cared to come, and there was a hefty turnout."

"Is there anything LEFT for breakfast, then?"

"Oh, sure. Quite a few people very excited to have their own set of patron deities, and a few more who probably just thought it was basic manners, brought up enough in offerings that we won't have to worry about food for a while." She finishes the next plate and hands it to you. "The kappa were especially keen. Hope you like fish."

"Well, hey! Good news, right?"

"Right. Of course, that means you and I are going to be busy for a while." Soaking a particularly filthy bowl, she takes her time explaining. "You probably noticed, but we moved in kind of a hurry. Shoved everything we didn't need into the nearest empty room, not to mention the total lack of landscaping."

You keep wiping down the one plate as she starts attacking whatever dried itself stuck onto the bowl. "I'm not sure I follow."

"Simple. While Kanako and the others are out paying the rent, so to speak, we'll be staying behind to try and make this place feel a bit more like... well, home. Understand?"

"I guess so," you say, setting down the plate and leaning against the counter to wait on the bowl. "Sort of. What are you wanting me to do, exactly?"

"Right now, I'm wanting you to focus on these dishes. The rest, we'll worry about when we get to it." Sanae rinses the bowl one last time and passes it over with a smile. "Time to earn your keep."

By the time I realized I'd screwed up the vote count, I was too far in and too lazy to go back and rewrite it, so yeah.

Anyway, more importantly:

LOL TIMESKIP!!!

Story's jumping forward one month. That's thirty days, each one mostly filled out helping Sanae fix up the place. How Cu Chulainn is going to spend his evenings and those other assorted spare moments, is now up to you. Surely you've got a pretty good idea of the options available, so just go ahead and write them in. Only thin I'll ask is, when multi-voting, list them in a descending order of priority, and don't get *too* carried away.

Get it? Good. See you niggers tomorrow. And by tomorrow, I mean THE GAME.

Tetro is like a steak dinner. For the most part, meal time in the evening is pretty "meh": you know it is what it is, but even so, why are you upset that it isn't better? But when Tetro posts, suddenly you have a perfectly done slab of sirloin in front of you. Holy crap, where did this come from? I don't care, but this is fucking awesome!

Yeah, it sucks you can't have steak every night. But oh-my-god it the best piece of meat ever when you get it. God help you if you miss it when it happens, though, because it is going to make the wait for the next delicious slice of beef all that much longer.

...

You end up spending most of the day cleaning up after the party. It isn't until the afternoon that the two of you manage to get the mountain of dishes completely cleaned up and put away (turns out she wasn't exaggerating when she said EVERY dish in the house was dirty). You get sent outside on trash detail while she stays in to clean the bathroom and toilet, meeting up at the end of your tasks for dinner. Hina is the first to come home, visibly tired, only taking a cup of tea and talking briefly about her day working among the kappa before excusing herself. Kanako and the Akis show up together, having all worked together at some farmland the tengu keep hidden away a couple valleys over. Tagging along are about a dozen laughing, thirsty workers from said farmland, an even mix of wolf and crow tengu, but all male and all muscle. The look Sanae gives you when they come filing through the door speaks volumes: you make a note to expect this sort of thing as a nightly occurrence. Fortunately, this get-together doesn't get nearly as large as the last one, breaking up after only a couple hours when Kanako turns in early and the tengu wander off to their homes. Sanae press-gangs Shizuha and Minoriko into helping her with the clean-up this time and shoos you off to bed, claiming you'll need the rest for tomorrow. You take her word for it and head into your room for some well-deserved sleep...

---

It's dark. Dark all around you. But your feet are on the ground, and you feel you actually... know this place. Yes, you're sure of it. Even before the light gradually increases to show it, you know what to expect: the lake, the reeds, and somewhere in the darkness ahead of you is the shrine. You HAVE been here before, twice. Once in the daytime, and once...

It all comes back to you, now. You wonder how you could ever have forgotten, but find you understand already. Of course, remembering her would have been too inconvenient for everyone. You imagine you'll forget this dream when you wake up, too. Just as well. Smiling, you watch the surface of the lake and wait for the lily pads to appear.

No, wait. Something's wrong. Where are the frogs? You strain your ears, but there's nothing to be heard but the water lapping against the shore. Something's wrong. Your body tenses, but the air is just as heavy as it was the last time, you cannot move. The light extends further outward over the lake, and something comes out of the darkness towards you... "seated" on an invisible cushion of air, one leg laid flat and the other bent straight up at a right angle, four short stone pillars somehow arranged behind her, Kanako stops just shy of the darkness and smirks down at you.

"Not who you were expecting, was it?"

As you draw in a breath to reply, you find your lungs are having to work extra just to get the strangely heavy air into them. Making a quick mental edit to take this into account: "Not entirely disappointed." Pause for breath, try to make it look thoughtful. "More surprised." PHEW. Damn, even talking's hard in this place. Have to remember to keep your sentences shorter.

"Heh." The other half of her mouth rises slightly to form a lopsided grin. Lowering her legs into a standing position, she drifts down to look you over. "Hmph," she decides after a little while. "You've certainly made yourself quite a fixture in my shrine these past couple of days." The emphasis placed on the possessive in that sentence does not go unnoticed. You almost start to reply, when she adds something more. "Very... popular."

Leniency has nothing to do with it. Kanako needs Sanae's power, but she won't admit to it; this is the only reason she tolerates Suwako's presence to begin with. In time however, when she gains enough faith here, she won't need a demigod as her shrine maiden. No, I had this possibility covered under the "When was it said returning to the outside world would solve anything" and "Unsupported by the data" clauses. It is not evident that Kanako would receive sufficient faith even by returning to the outside world and using Sanae--or that the gods have regained enough power to teleport to the outside world--therefore, the claim that Kanako "needs Sanae as a backup plan" lacks solid grounding.

>Sanae is a divine being

Look, if Sanae's miracle-working could have gotten Kanako enough faith, the Moriya crew wouldn't have come to Gensokyo in the first place. Simple as that. There IS no backup plan - the relocation was a desperation move by Kanako, who was running low on power. The relocation itself canonically took almost all of the faith she had left, and I doubt there's been enough time or worship to recharge her enough for another trip back out.

Kanako IS bluffing - she has almost no power right now. However, if she doesn't start gathering faith, she will die, and that would be bad for everyone on the mountain as far as I'm concerned.

It's odd that your conclusion is "Kanako is bluffing" considering the rest of your post. Rather, if Sanae is at all important to the operations of her shrine, and Kanako's relatively low on faith/power, AND Kanako thinks we might interfere with Sanae's work at the shrine, then all the more reason for Kanako to seriously consider getting us out of the way. If she thinks we'll be more of a problem then help, all she needs to consider is a satisfactory means of getting rid of us.

More seriously, if Kanako puts her foot down we'll have to try and remove her notion that Chulainn's actions are a problem. After all, it's unlikely that running away with Sanae is a Good End, and if Sanae and the "maiden" part are crucial then Kanako won't/can't back down. Therefore, Chulainn's relationship with Sanae will be put on an indefinite hold until we can remove one of the factors that makes Kanako see Sanae the shrine MAIDEN as crucial to Moriya Shrine.

But she can't simply get rid of Ku-chan without an excuse. Sanae, Suwako & the subordinate gods wouldn't tolerate it, as evidenced by their considerable faith in him and the fact that their existence in the real world would have been more to do with Sanae than Kanako herself. Compounding this is that the appearance of any kind of in-fighting or instability in the Moriya shrine at this point is going to be looked upon with severe suspicion by the Tengu; why else do you think Tenma would exalt the third party Cu Chulainn among his own peoples? Finally if he was not at all valuable to Kanako, she wouldn't have set all this in motion in the first place. The mistake she makes is presuming that he would simply fold under pressure.

>>3244
The fact that the other goddesses kneeled at Kanako's appearance--if not complete artifice--indicates that they accept a subordinate position. It's not clear how subordinate they are, but depending on the strength of their loyalties, Kanako may not have to worry about them "not tolerating" her actions. After all, as deities their relationship may go back decades or centuries--Chulainn has only been around for a month or so. Similarly, depending on Sanae's loyalties and the depth of their past relationship, Kanako could simply say flat out why she's kicking Chulainn out, and Sanae may end up caving. Suwako's position may allow her to say something, though there's no guarantee she'd actually make a move.

Granted the previous paragraph, this also removes the problem of the shrine being viewed in a negative light by the tengu due to infighting.

Kanako may not have made a "mistake" expecting Chulainn to fold under pressure. This may have simply been a warning granted to someone who has been an ally. Failure to comply may mean force escalation: eviction.

And as for finding a suitable excuse...I'm sure a writer could come up with various possibilities, assuming she doesn't state her actual reason outright. For instance, she could send us out on dangerous missions to try and gain new converts, or something. Or just stick us in the human village as a missionary for an indefinite amount of time.

But that's just it - Sanae's power is, like Reimu, in her bloodline. The only acceptable way to pass on the position of Moriya Shrine Maiden is for her to have children - and that implicitly means her NOT remaining 'maidenly'.

The Hakurei line, and by extension the very existence of Gensokyo, is proof that a Miko doesn't have to remain a virgin in Gensokyo.

Point, set, and match.
>> No. 3253
Kanako's not an evil bitch. She's just overpossessive and doesn't quite understand humans. In particular, she's completely oblivious to how Sanae feels.

Sanae has had to abandon her old world and her old life, and is worried about losing her old self as well. There may be some genuine personal affection there, but in large part, Chulainn is the only fragment of the past she has left, and she's deeply attached to that. This is why she has tried so hard to integrate us into her new world, made us promise specifically not to leave her, and got so angry when Kanako gave us an eyeful. It's not so much that she likes Chulainn as much as she's afraid of losing him, or someone taking him away, and thereby losing herself.

And it seems that her fears were actually justified. If Kanako persists in this course, oblivious to what Sanae's actually feeling, well... what happens to a goddess whose shrine maiden resents them? I rather doubt it's pleasant. Faith creates divine power, not the other way around. Reimu has the lion's share of it in Gensokyo, despite having no god in evidence and breaking most of the miko's usual code of behavior, because she lives a happy life and makes others happy too. For everyone's good, Kanako needs to be convinced to lay off.

Another point to consider is the fact that we already promised Suwako to take care of Sanae and make her happy, without regard to anything else.

From the other side of the fence, Tetro's trying rather desperately to create some conflict to keep the story moving, hence the eight syllable limit preventing us from giving Kanako a speech and solving the Sanae path right now. I sympathize with this but can't really endorse it. Sanae route was decided from the beginning, Chulainn and oaths add to the restrictions, there really isn't any meaningful choice possible in this situation short of trying to trick your readers. Just write it out to the end and be done with it.

I don't think anybody worships Reimu as a deity, so she does not, per se, have the lion's share of faith. The Hakurei deity may actually be stiffed in terms of faith...but it's hard to say, since we never hear anything about said deity.

A goddess whose shrine maiden resents her has a resentful underling--that's about it.

I'm actually rather amused that Sanae was gathering faith personally on the outside, since people thought she was personally causing miracles when acting as Kanako's miko. Must've been a pain if that misunderstanding actually resulted in Sanae failing to gather faith for Kanako.
>> No. 3259
>>3257

Personally, I think that while Reimu's power is not based on faith, but on skill and bloodline traits, Sanae's rely solely on her belief towards her goddesses. After all, Sanae is a human, an outsider at that. Distracting her from her miko job would make her (in long run) gradually forget about her duties and slowly lose the so-called, and therefore powers. And what are the goddesses without a powerful miko at their service?

What part of "it's her life" do you find equivocal? If Sanae decides she should wait, then she should wait. If she's willing to quit her job over it on the other hand, it's again her decision. If Sanae decides never to have any children at all or conversely that she wants to become Sayo's half-tengu baby farm, it's STILL her decision.

We've promised Suwako we would make her happy. We promised Sanae herself that we wouldn't leave her. The legendary hero Cu Chulainn cannot break his oaths even if it kills him. If it really comes to blows, then Kanako seals her own fate: By dying as a result failure to live up to contradictory oaths, Ku-chan becomes a hero demigod whose legend is known throughout the entire Western world--more than a match for a rootless snake from Bumfuck, Japan who only survives by leeching off the descendants of other gods. She'll get her just desserts in the end, just like Cu Chulainn's antagonists did.

Worship doesn't define faith; belief defines faith. People believe the Hakurei shrine maiden is powerful and assume it is from the gods. Reimu herself says her power comes from the gods ("It's not magic, it's divine power.") and we see the effects of Reimu calling upon gods in SSiB. Even if there "really is" no Hakurei deity, belief creates an analogue. Regardless, according to her official profile Kanako believes the Hakurei shrine holds a lot of faith in Gensokyo and this is the reason she sends Sanae to challenge her.

Ku-chan does have things to indicate that she's wrong, the modern beliefs among other humans: People's bodies are their own. People (especially attractive people) typically engage in sex at a young age. Shrine maidens don't need to be virgins nowadays, and emphasizing "maiden" is rhetoric--a semantic weight that does not carry over into Japanese. Ku-chan hasn't made any assumptions towards Sanae to indicate that he views her as other than a human, and I don't think it would bode well for their relationship for him to start.

Cu Chulainn goddamn mission statement is that he doesn't tell lies to save his own hide: You mention the importance of "implication" and "context", but the claim that "I understand" implies something in this context other than complete obeisance is pure sophistry.

If that isn't in fact what you're implying, that we should in effect lie to Kanako, we can resolve this all very easily by combining the two choices:

Even if this were, that the "Hakurei border" is somehow contingent on the current shrine maiden (it isn't; read her official character profiles to see she doesn't have to do much concerning it at all), the point you seem to have missed is that Sanae has innate divine power OUTSIDE of her title as shrine maiden. Moreover in her official profile it states that she was able to acquire faith herself from humans, making her a "living god" even though she does not have to acquire faith to survive (because of her physical body).

>In terms of power, Reimu is superior.

Of that there is no doubt, at least in terms of danmaku. Still, Reimu isn't an omnipotent being: She was unable to force Yukari to restore the Border of Life & Death, unable to defeat Suika in a spellcard battle, and unable to defeat VIVIT in an unrestricted battle (without spellcard rules).

>but the claim that "I understand" implies something in this context other than complete obeisance is pure sophistry

That's just, like, your opinion, man. Plenty of people use "I understand" to mean nothing more than "I don't require any further explanation," without any indication that they will follow the directives of the speaker. A person can understand and then reject directives, or understand and follow them literally without conforming to their spirit. But at its most basic, it means nothing more than "you have successfully communicated with me."

You can insist that it's a lie, despite it literally being otherwise and frequently used otherwise, in which case I'll have nothing more to say.
>> No. 3293

But he's right. In this instance, "I understand" caries an implicit tone of obeisance. You went on about context, but you're seriously ignoring this? You're trying to make a special case.

On another note, Sanae's body is hers. Period. Any thought otherwise is going to rely on an archaic set of beliefs that has no place here. Even if you say it was modern beliefs that forced the Moriya Shrine to come to Gensokyo, it should be obvious that the troublesome beliefs would be the increasing secularism and atheism of the modern world, or foreign religions overtaking that of the Shrine. The faith problem would stem from a lack of belief in the existence of Suwako and Kanako, not necessarily - or even likely - from a rejection of older notions of humans as property. Rejecting an aspect of a religion, after all, isn't the same as rejecting the religion.

Also, LOL athiesm. That just sounds funny in the context of the story. It's like the public was all "hey guys, let's ignore these miracles this high school girl is performing!"

Thing is, people these days would be less likely to consider Sanae's feats to be miracles in the first place. While her actions might have warranted instant worship back in the day, people now would be just as likely to stop and wonder how she did something amazing instead. Not to mention that half the people who were converted would be more likely to worship her, who they can actually see, than the proper goddesses.

On another note, we can respect her position even if we take her virginity. I mean, really, how are people going to know as long as we control ourselves? It's not like it's socially acceptable to ask her "hey, are you fucking that guy?" And they're not going to get the chance to reach in and see if she has her hymen.

Okay, maybe Yukari would try both of those.

Maybe so, but Kanako seems to think otherwise. And since Kanako is the reason Sanae is there in the first place, it might be more appropriate to say that Kanako wants us to respect her by treating her servant in a particular manner. Which is fine by me - DO NOT WANT pissed off wind god.

No, it doesn't. That is simply wrong.

Yeah, I'll have to--conditionally--agree/disagree with that. Admittedly, "I understand"--when construed in the context of the other choices--implies acceding that you won't go sex up Sanae, as it's placed in contradistinction to the more rebellious and confrontational "It's her life". However, from the context of the actual dialogue, "I understand" is not a phrase that necessarily implies any sort of concession.

Personally, I favor a more moderate, "[x] I see. But isn't it her choice?"

It's not even an argument. It's an observation that the claim and its truth state is irrelevant to the issue. Thus, any argument supporting or attacking the claim is irrelevant. An argument establishing its relevance might be possibly useful, but none has been made.

>I sincerely doubt this has anything to do with Kanako thinking of Sanae as property. More likely she just wants us to respect Sanae's position - without a human representative to act as the 'face' of the church, Kanako would have a harder time gathering and maintaining faith.

If that were the case then "it's her life" is completely appropriate. This has nothing to do with her position itself being in jeopardy: There are two humans living under the same roof in Moriya. Both are from the Outside. One is male. One is female. They are seen together daily by dozens of Tengu attending the parties at the shrine. Cu Chulainn already has a reputation among the Tengu as a sort of heroic scoundrel, and Suwako knows what Aya continues to print in her articles about his exploits.
Now if a single Tengu believes they AREN'T fucking like jackrabbits, I would be very surprised. And belief is what matters in Gensokyo isn't it? It's not exactly like the other shrine maiden is known for adhering to "standard" shrine maiden behavior anyway.

Secondly, Sanae hasn't implied anything of the sort herself, even though she extracts the promise of not abandoning her, and states they have a relationship that is "moving too fast."

Maaaybe. Depending on Chulainn's motivation and the notion of "appropriate". "It's her life" could easily be tantamount to--"I want to screw her, so get off my back Kanako"--in which I'd call it less "appropriate" and more just Chulainn being selfish.

>Now if a single Tengu believes they AREN'T fucking like jackrabbits, I would be very surprised.
Shrine maiden. The tengu know it. And if it's culturally standard for a miko to cease acting as a miko upon no longer being a maiden, then it would be unsurprising if many tengu thought no such thing.
As a side note...the tengu probably don't have much or any reason to think of Chulainn as a scoundrel.

Or maybe he wants Kanako to stop treating her like a possession. And of course he wouldn't thinking of it like that--have you read the story? The promises he already made? The precedent regarding Sanae is that he likes her, even if he isn't afraid to agitate her, but nothing suggesting cruelty or possessiveness. Secondly Kanako's "order" is offensive, to both himself and Sanae, so it's no surprise he'd reply bitingly.

>As a side note...the tengu probably don't have much or any reason to think of Chulainn as a scoundrel.

Because he's been playing sides since the start. He betrayed the Tengu, remember? In quite a spectacular manner according to Aya's article. Then he tries to play mediator and is given honors by Lord Tenma.

I disagree--Chulainn's rejection presupposes the intention to sex Sanae up. Kanako said that Chulainn should draw the line on his interactions--Chulainn only has reason to reject Kanako's statement if he intends to have sex with Sanae. The notion of Sanae being a "possession" doesn't arise at all, UNTIL we suppose that Chulainn plans to have sex with Sanae and thereafter consider Kanako's actions as restricting Sanae's freedom to do so.

Of course, this analysis is incomplete since data regarding Sanae's views on this matter are absent.

>Because he's been playing sides since the start. He betrayed the Tengu, remember? In quite a spectacular manner according to Aya's article. Then he tries to play mediator and is given honors by Lord Tenma.
–noun
1. an unprincipled, dishonorable person; villain.
–adjective
2. mean or base in nature; villainous; unprincipled; dishonorable.

Chulainn was understood by Lord Tenma and Commander Takagi as striving for peace. Failing to act as a spy--a role he was forced to take under threat of execution--is hardly a betrayal that makes him worthy of being considered a "scoundrel". The same goes for infiltrating the fortress and busting out Shizuha. Moreover, even if we were to apply such a label because of his actions, the deeds themselves do not imply anything about Chulainn's promiscuity or lack thereof--hence this "reputation" need not affect the tengu's thoughts on Chulainn's sex life.

Of course, the tengu were strung pretty tightly after the battle with humans in the past, so who knows what prejudices they might hold regarding humans' sex life.

>Now if a single Tengu believes they AREN'T fucking like jackrabbits, I would be very surprised.

I think it quite likely that the tengu will believe in the chastity of religious figures if their lord and a goddess agree on the subject. You CAN have male priests and shrine maidens in the same place, after all. That's pretty much the standard. And as long as Cu is working in the shrine, his position is similar as far as anyone outside it is concerned.

What he intends really doesn't matter. Only how Kanako takes it. He's not going to get the chance to explain himself.
