"A drink, please." You say.
"Sure." Rinnosuke says. "I'll make you some tea. You look like you could do with some after that."
You nod. "Thank you." He heads over to the door to the right and vanishes deeper inside.
"Come on." Youmu stands back up again and offers you her hand. Satori untangles herself from your shoulders and you take Youmu's offer, grasping her forearm as she pulls you to your feet.
Youmu looks at you for a moment. "Those kind of breakdowns aren't something you can fake." She says, then frowns and offers you her hand again. "I apologise." Her words are sort of stiff, but she seems honest. You take her hand and she simply nods before returning to her seat.

You sit back down again and Satori pulls up a chair nearby.
"So." You say, taking a deep breath an pinching the bridge of your nose. "This is a lot to take in, but I think I'm coping. What's the rest of your story? What's going on in this town?"
"That depends." Tewi calls, now sitting over in her nest of computers again.
"On what?" You frown.
"Tewi means we don't know everything." Youmu says. "We know this place is a prison, of some kind. We can't leave."
"You'd tried?" You ask.
Youmu nods. "You get to the edge of town and the roads just ... stop, leading into a forest. You go in, you get turned around, you end up pointed back at the town every time. We've even tired taking compasses and lines in there, doesn't work."
You frown in thought. "Okay, go on, what else?"
"Where did Rinnosuke get to?" Youmu asks.
"It's okay." Satori says. "He was talking about Yukari."
Youmu nods. "Okay. We found this thing the hive were trying to dig up. Like Rinnosuke said, Yukari tried to get it back. She sent ... it was ... " Youmu trails off, staring at a point on the floor.
"What's the matter?" You ask.
"Youmu." Satori says, utter sorrow etched on her face.

Rinnosuke comes back through the door, holding a steaming mug of tea.
"Thanks." You say as he hands it to you and you take a sip.
"I can't do this." Youmu says suddenly, getting up and turning around to hide her expression.
"Youmu, wait!" Satori gets up and hurries after Youmu as she leaves the room through the back door.

"Are you going to run away too? Or can I hear the rest of this now?" You ask Rinnosuke. You would follow Satori, but it seems like whatever upset Youmu, she wanted to be alone.
"Ah." Rinnosuke says. "Of course. Tewi, could you help me with this?"
Tewi nods, distracted by something on the screens of her computer-nest.
"Where did Youmu get to?" Rinnosuke asks.
"She was speaking about this 'Yukari' sending people after you."
"Ahhh, yes." Rinnosuke sits down and leans back, obviously tired. "Well, Yukari sent people after Youki and Tewi mostly, like I said."
"'Cept I'm too lucky to be caught." Tewi interjects.
"Indeed." Rinnosuke says. "Tewi is rather slippery and it seems to rub off on those around her. She's been indispensable."
"Why thank you!" Tewi mock-bows from her seat.
"What kind of people did Yukari send?" You ask.

Rinnosuke rubs his chin in thought. "During daylight hours it was mostly people who would simply report their whereabouts to Yukari, at night things got rather more complicated." He says. "Some of the ... real people in the town, they work for her."
"Who? Anyone I should watch out for?" You ask.
"The Shrine Maiden." Rinnosuke says.
Your eyes widen, not Sa-
"Reimu Hakurei." He finishes. You breath a silent sigh of relief.
"We've seen her alongside the hive." He explains. "Youki attacked her once," Rinnosuke shakes his head. "She's practically invincible."
You frown. "A girl that size? Against a fully grown man?" You ask. Tewi bursts out laughing.
Rinnosuke raises an eyebrow. "Would you believe me if I told you she really does wield the power of her Gods?"
You sit back, thinking. "After today, no. I can believe that quite easily to be honest." You sigh. "Bloody hell."
"I know." Rinnosuke says. "There are others, but most of them simply seem to be happier to preserve their situation, not actively working for Yukari. Some we're not sure about." He shrugs. "It makes approaching anyone very difficult."
You nod. "Yeah, anybody could be an informer?"
"Basically, yes." He hesitates. "And more than that, Yukari can make people who aren't people at all."
You frown. "Isn't that what you just said most of the people in the town were?"
Rinnosuke shakes his head. "No, they're not anything, simulations, background noise intended to create the illusion of a real place. Satori can tell when there isn't really a person there, just a void."
"Okay, go on." That explains a lot.
"Yukari can make people who appear to think, that appear real to Satori as well as to everyone else." He explains. "One of them approached us last year. We thought she was real. She was a sort of ... ah," Rinnosuke turns a little pale. "Well, an assassin. She got inside and we never saw Youki again. He just vanished one night. We think she tried to pull the same trick on Satori, but then we found out what she was and had to kill her."

"Without Youki's leadership we've been bumbling around in the dark ever since."

You just sit there in silence for a long time. Rinnosuke looks down, rubbing his eyes. Even Tewi looks sort of downcast, listlessly spinning on her chair.

"So is this why you tried to kill me?" You ask, feeling numbed by Rinnosuke's explanation. Maybe you should say something else, some kind of condolence, but you have too many questions.
He nods. "A new student turns up out of the blue, appears to be a real person? We were very concerned when you started showing interest in Satori."
You feel a little colour spreading across your cheeks. "I wasn't-"
Rinnosuke shakes his head. "Don't worry about that now." He says. "We just thought you might be another assassin, but I agree with Youmu, you can't fake the kind of breakdown you just had. I don't think you can anyway."
You wrack your brains for a minute. "So who else is in this little group of yours?" You ask.

Rinnosuke glances at Tewi.
"Yeah, s'fine, tell him." She says. Rinnosuke nods.
"There's me," he says. "Youmu, Tewi and Satori you've seen right here. Rika, another student, she's in the basement at the moment. Four more, Momizi, another student, along with Nitori, I believe you know her already." Rinnosuke gulps. "A girl called Tenshi and ... er ... Mima, who I think you also know."
"Is that all?" You ask. He nods.
"That's everyone. Excluding Youki, of course."

You nod in response, still thinking. You need to know as much as possible, you need to know about yourself, you think as you glance at your fists. It's absurd, but you should ask. You turn to Tewi. She's gone back to her computer screens.
"Tewi." You say. She looks up.
"Yes~?" She cocks her head.
"You mentioned two Oni, when you attacked me at lunchtime today. Who are they?"
"Oh." She glances at Rinnosuke. He sighs.
"The Oni are bad news." He says.
"And how!" Tewi exclaims.
"Ah." You say. "That doesn't sound promising."
Rinnosuke shakes his head. "The Oni stick together, Suika and Yuugi, both students at the school. But Suika is often hanging around with Reimu. We don't know what that means, but it's too much of a risk to approach either of them." He says.
"Mmmhmm." Tewi says. "Scrap metal and a few guns isn't going to stop an Oni." She flashes a grin at you. "But another Oni could."

Something doesn't add up here.
"How do you know that they're Oni?" You ask.
Rinnosuke sucks on his teeth. "I said that Satori can tell when people are people, right?" He says. "It's because she's a sort of mind-reader."
You raise your eyebrows in shock. "A mind-reader? You're kidding me."
"She's not perfect, the thing Yukari send after us fooled her. I don't understand it, but she can hear thoughts, somehow."
"Okay." You frown, not quite sure if you want to believe all this. Maybe you can test that with her later.

"Speaking of stopping an Oni with guns." You say, gesturing to Tewi's computers. "Where did you get all this equipment? Unless there's a local armoury I don't know about, I don't see how you could've picked up machine guns if you can't leave the town."
"We can't leave the town." Tewi says, grinning. "Doesn't mean people can't get in."
Rinnosuke clears his throat. "Youki had a contact who could get in and out. She wasn't from the town originally, so whatever keeps us here didn't effect her. She supplied stuff to Youki, the guns, the computers, some other stuff. Her name was Renko, and with Youki gone we've got no idea how to contact her again."
"Ah. So you're in trouble there too?" You ask.
Rinnosuke nods. "We only have so many bullets, and none of us are trained to shoot." He says. "We're reluctant to move the guns from automatic stationary over-watch on this place."

You put your head in your hands, thinking. If this is all the truth then they're in big trouble, they've lost their leader, their line of supply, their best fighter and they're taking pot-shots in the dark. They were so paranoid they tried to kill you without even talking to you first. One question still burns in your mind.

"What's so important that you and this Yukari woman are willing to kill each other over?" You ask. "This town isn't so bad, in the day at least. What exactly are you fighting for?"
Tewi makes a sound half-way between a laugh and a scornful dismissal, turning back to her computers.
Rinnosuke takes a minute to answer. "We can't leave, we had our memories of life before this place removed or tampered with, nearly everyone around us isn't a real person, there are monsters prowling the streets at night, we get hunted down for mere curiosity and you ask why we bother?" He seems almost angry, but not quite, just a little sad.
"Yes." You say. "I want to why. I have to know why if I'm even going to consider helping you."
He stares at you for a moment. "Fair enough." He says.
"We fight because if we don't, we'd be living lies. Tewi would be dead and the Gods know what Yukari would have done if she'd got her hands on what the hive were digging up. That's why she wants us gone, we got to it first, and we're a threat to the illusion of this town. At least ... we think so."

You stare back at him. Back in school he seemed like an average student, but the man looking back at you now is more like a resistance fighter. Organised, hard-eyed, trying to win you over to his cause.

"I understand." You say. "I think I understand."
"Thank you." Rinnosuke says, taking a deep breath.
"Yeah." Tewi chimes in. "You better understand, pah. Spineless little Oni."
You do your best to ignore her. "There's one thing I still don't get." You say. "This 'assassin' who made Youki vanish. How do you know she was a 'fake person' and not actually a real person in Yukari's employ?" You ask. "You said that Satori thought she was real too, so why wasn't she?"
Rinnosuke sighs and looks down. "We have a method, other than Satori, of telling who is what now. When we used it on her ... well," he shudders a little. "She stopped being human on the outside." His eyes take on a far-away, glazed look. "She was in the back at the time, just standing there. I still remember when her head turned to me and just ... opened up like a gigantic mouth." He shakes his head and pinches the bridge of his nose. "That wasn't a human being or anything like one."
Tewi glares at you from behind her computer monitors. "Shouldn't have asked that." She says.
"No," Rinnosuke says. "No it's okay, he's curious, he needs to know we're not the bad guys here."

"What's this method you have of telling who is real and who isn't?" You ask
"Other than Satori?" He asks.
You nod.
"It's ... it's what the hive were digging up last year. The thing that Yukari wants back." He says. "Satori can tell the difference between a real person and a person with nothing inside, a blank with no real presence. This can tell the difference between anything, it can also tell you what your name is."
"What is it?" You ask, suddenly eager to know. This 'thing' sounds like the core of everything here.
"It's probably better if I show you, it's in the basement." Rinnosuke says.

You drain the rest of your tea in a flash. "Okay, now?" You ask.
"Whenever you like." Rinnosuke spreads his hands.
"Oooh! Oooh!" Tewi hops down from her seat. "Wait, wait!" She patters over and turns to face you, putting her hands on her hips.
"Before you go see the root of the world." She leans forwards "Look what you did!" She points at her nose. Now you're concentrating and not having a major psychological breakdown, you can see that it's bruised, swollen and purple from where you punched her earlier today.
"You're a heavy hitter." She says. "Do we finally have our Samson? Do you need me to pass you a jawbone?" She asks, totally straight-faced.

I know we just got something of an explanation as to the "why" about that whole "trying to kill us" thing, but still I can't help but find the implications of this kinda troubling.

Of the six people we've now met of this group (Mima, Satori, Rinnosuke, Nitori, Tewi, and Youmu) only three of them voted for the "not killing us" option. We can pretty much guess that Satori and Tewi voted in our favor, and Youmu against, but that still leaves the remaining three in somewhat uncertain standing with us. I could see Rinnosuke going either way, but as nice and friendly as both Mima and Nitori had seemed...

Well, just how easily can you trust someone who can come off as so friendly to you, and yet turn around and apparently have no problem voting in favor of murdering you?
>> No. 80256
It bothers me that Youmu was the only person to show up and fight us. I have to wonder why this is.

We know Momizi has some combat ability, and I bet she’s not the only one. It seems unlikely that Youmu would have turned down competent support, especially given the big deal they’ve made about that previous assassin. When Youmu did try to call for help there was none available, despite the fact that they lured us into a trap at a location of their choosing. They could simply be dangerously incompetent, but the fact that they’ve survived this long makes me doubt that.

The only conclusion I can draw is that they wanted us to die, but were not willing to do it themselves. But why would they be afraid of killing a ‘meat puppet’? There would be no guilt in that. There would be guilt in killing us if we were real though, and the fact that they all managed to be somewhere else when the time came means they knew there was a very good chance that we were. Yet they still voted to kill us.
>> No. 80258
>>But why would they be afraid of killing a ‘meat puppet’?

Oh, that's easy. It's because they weren't sure what we even were. Maybe we were like that assassin that fooled Satori, and something that wasn't even technically human. But, we could just as easily have been an actual person but in Yukari's employ, be it knowingly or not. Enemy or not, I would think the chance that you could very well be murdering another human being would be enough to give anyone pause. Well, unless you're as nutty as Tewi can seem to be, at least.

For that reason, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they also had to debate over who would carry out the execution, with Youmu being the one who pulled the short straw.
>> No. 80259
>>80256

In my mind, it was because the others couldn't make it in time, or in the event that we were a puppet of Yukari and something went wrong, only one person would be lost. We did book it there pretty fast, and with us being an oni, we might've gotten there way ahead of what they were planning, which caused some screw ups in their plan.

You always know where you stand with other oni, and so do they. Even if they turn out to be genuine enemies, I think it'd be worth schmoozing them if for nothing else than to confirm and disconfirm some things. I have the feeling there are some pretty big misconceptions held by Youmu and her group.

We can learn something about ourselves from this. If we can leave, that means we weren't from Gensokyo originally, and that our existence is an anamoly. If we can't, then we know we're stuck in the same boat as everybody else.

>If it weren't for the fact that they are, for all we know, allied with the being who had no problem with basically turning us into a vegetable in that Bad End on the roof

Yes, against the word of the girl who attacked us with a meat cleaver and the other girl who attempted to hack us into pieces with her sword. The reason we have for believing that the other oni are enemies is that they think the oni are associated with someone they think is associated with Yukari, whom they think is the one controlling the extermination squads, all over an object of dubious value, other than that they think Yukari wants it.

These people are run-ragged, fighting for their very lives; they're at the point where they felt it was safer to kill a potential ally than even chance you being an enemy. They're leaderless, paranoid, and running mostly off of extrapolation. We haven't been targeted for extermination ourselves, despite our relatively high-profile entrance. I don't think we should make the same mistake of assuming everyone is our enemy.

Who knows if Reimu is really in with Yukari. Usually she is just getting dragged into some mess by her and too lazy to do something against it. And Suika is probably in for the party and the drinking.
Walk up to Reimu and ask about the whole truth or just kidnap her in broad daylight. She may be invincible but a surprise attack might work.

I don't know. It seems like Reimu would relish beating the shit out of you afterward. And in the off chance she weren't yet your enemy, you'd make her into one with that.

A better way to 'attack' Reimu, seeing as she has a very low tolerance for frustration, would be to harass her in secret. Leave odd notes. Fake phone calls to the cops, about noise disturbances. Order a dozen pizzas to be delivered to her address. Sign her up for all kinds of junk mail. Egg her apartment. Steal her TV. Fudge her test scores. That kind of stuff.

Actually, thanks for pointing this out, it means I haven't done a good enough job of explaining this in the story.

Ever read Discworld? When Death speaks, and others are sure he said something, because they remember him speaking, but he never actually speaks? Sort of like that. How on earth could you possibly explain that without immediately giving off that the protagonist doesn't know his own name?

You grin back at her. "As long as I get to rip it off of your mouth." You say.
Tewi breaks into a grin. "Yup, you'll do fine." She says, then patters away, back to her computers. "If your name actually is Samson then I'll have a rematch with you sometime!" She calls back.
"Hopefully without the meat cleaver." You mutter to yourself.
"You ready?" Rinnosuke says. "It's just in the basement."
"Sure." You nod. He stands up and you follow him, over to the second of the two doors at the back of the room.
Inside is a stairwell, turning twice and leading down. The temperature drops as you walk, must be underground. A huge loading door, welded shut, stands to one side of the last flight of stairs.
"What is this place anyway?" You ask Rinnosuke.
He shrugs. "Just a couple of offices and some storage space. Probably meant to be rented out, but the car park above is never used, all blocked off."

Across a concrete floor from the last step, is a small metal door set in a much larger metal wall, built to retract into the ceiling. Shutting the smaller metal door is a girl you've seen before.
"Hey Rika." Rinnosuke says.
She looks up, about to lock the door behind her. "Oh ... oh hi." She looks at you, eyes a little wide. She's wearing a black cardigan about three sizes too large, and a pair of jeans covered with oil stains.
"You missed a hell of a time outside." He says.
"I ... I see." She says, still staring at you. "Is he ... ?"
Rinnosuke nods. "He's fine, but we need to show him to-"
"It's just gone to sleep!" Rika protests. "I'll have to go through the entire start-up sequence again!"

"Hello Rika." You say, making her gaze snap back to you.
"H-hi." She says, gulping. Then she screws her eyes up for a moment, sighs and steps forward, holding her hand out to you.

No, they've seen the Oni associating with Reimu, who they've seen alongside those creatures (and who one of their number has actually fought with at that time) who they very likely have seen being commanded by Yukari.
I somehow doubt, with all they're saying, they're simply making guesses about how all these things are connected.

>>I don't think we should make the same mistake of assuming everyone is our enemy.

So, instead, you think we should make the same old mistake of automatically distrusting and/or dismissing what we're told by people who have been here far longer than we have, have more experience here than we have, and thus have far more reason to actually know what they're talking about than we do? And why? Because they tried to harm us/seem crazy/we just don't like them? They might be honest to us about the enemy, but they'll also be honest to the enemy about us. Likewise, if we're really going to play at this "we're an Oni" thing, we also won't exactly be able to simply lie about our new friends, will we?

You reach out and shake her hand. It's small, but calloused and rough around the palm. She gives you a smile and a nod of the head, which makes the two braids at the back of her head bob up and down. She's cute, but you can't just let this slide.
"You voted to kill me then?" You ask innocently.
Rika's shoulders slump. "Ehh, yeah."
"Thanks. Good to know." You say, breaking into a massive grin.
"Oh man, don't do that." She whines, letting go of your hand and grimacing. "I hadn't even met you! Youmu says jump and I ask how high, okay?"
"No hard feelings." You keep grinning and Rika's face goes a little pale. She holds her hands up.
"Look, I'm sorry! I trusted Youmu's judgement!" She says. "Wouldn't'a happened if Youki was still calling the shots."
Rinnosuke gently puts his hand on your shoulder. "She scares easily, doesn't she?" He says, but you can hear the amusement in his voice.

"Geeze, fuck you guys." Rika says, scowling. "You want me to wake Sigma up or what?"
Rinnosuke nods. "Yes, please. He needs to see it."
"Did 'ya go crazy?" Rika asks. "Can't remember your name?"
"Yeah, sort of." You say.
"Sigma'll fix that right up." She turns and opens the metal door again. "Come on in." She heads through the little door and Rinnosuke moves to follow her. You step in behind him and into the next room.

The room is large, the walls bare concrete. Wires, jump cables and computer innards lie scattered around, and against one wall is a large desk with a powerful-looking computer sitting on it. A large, flat-panel display is standing next to the computer.
On the other side of the room is what looks like an electric generator, with a number of barrels and crates piled around it. Towards the back of the room is a bank of computers, all wired up to the flat-screen display. Wires and leads and power lines converge at the centre of the room.

"What the hell is that?" You ask, stepping forward gingerly.
In the middle of the room is a huge, perfectly black, perfectly round sphere. The top of the sphere reaches to about the middle of your chest. Sand-bags, rolls of tarpaulin and bits of scrap metal have been piled up around it in a kind of nest, presumably to stop it rolling away.
As you get closer to the sphere, you can see that near the base, where it touches the floor, are several long, green tentacle-like protrusions, into which many of the trailing wires have been jammed or clamped on. A pair of thick, heavy-duty electrical jumper cables have been clipped to one of the tentacles, the other ends leading to the generator.

Just above these tentacles is a symbol in red: Σ

"That's what the hive were digging up." Rinnosuke says. "It's called Sigma."
Rika sits down at the computer and starts messing with the keyboard.
"Want me to wake it up?" She asks. But you're not listening. You're stepping closer to the sphere.
The surface isn't just black, it's so dark it absorbs all light, reflecting nothing back at you. You reach out, some absurd notion forming that you should touch it, to see if it will absorb your hand as well.

Your fingertips almost brush the surface, tingling.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Rinnosuke says, but he sounds bored rather than worried.

Rinnosuke's voice snaps you back to reality and you snatch your hand away from the surface of the sphere.
"Wh ... what just happened?" You take a step back from the thing, blinking and rubbing your eyes.
Rinnosuke chuckles. "It's harmless, don't worry." He says. "Just part of how it tries to communicate, but rather ... difficult to get your head around." He points to Rika's computer. "Our method is much easier."
"I'm running the boot-up sequence now." She says, tapping away at the keyboard. Whatever she's doing, it's all in command-lines, you can't make head nor tail of it.
"Throw the power on when I say so." Rika says, eyes fixed on the screen.
Rinnosuke crosses to the generator and grabs a huge handle, waiting.
"Ready?" Rika asks.
"Whenever you are." Rinnosuke replies. You just shuffle over to Rika, rather than risk standing too close to the sphere.
"Okay ... wait for it." She says, tongue held between her teeth, eyes fixed on the screen.

A sudden pulse goes through the room, like air rushing to fill a gap.
"Now!" Rika says. Rinnosuke pulls the switch down and electricity sparks at the end of the jumper cables, making one of the green tentacles twitch.
"Okay, he's coming online." Rika says. "Gimme a minute."
You glance at the sphere as Rinnosuke joins you by the computer, but you can't see any change in its surface. You hold your hand out again, frowning with curiosity this time. You can almost feel a slight humming, but far below your range of hearing, more like a dull sensation spreading throughout the bones of your hand.
"So what exactly is this thing?" You ask
"He - it, rather, is called Sigma." Rika says. "It's an artificial intelligence."
"You're kidding me?" You ask.
Rinnosuke clears his throat. "Well, we think it's a thinking machine. We're not really sure what it is, we only have some very general ideas."
"Took me six months just to teach it to speak English." Rika says. "Here we go, he's waking up."

You glance back at the sphere and nearly jump out of your skin in surprise. A crack has appeared in the surface, a long curve of white near the bottom. It slowly gets bigger, opening up across nearly the entire front side of the sphere with mechanical slowness. It reveals red, then black again at the very middle.
A huge eyeball stares out at the room.
"Woah." You manage to breathe. "Can it ... can it see us?"
The eyeballs swivels towards you, unblinking.
"Yup." Rika grins. "Cool isn't it?"
"Something like that." You gulp, staring back at the eye.

"First things first, Rika." Rinnosuke says.
"Sure, sure, he's still groggy. Gimme a sec." She says, turning back to the computer screen.
You glance between the screen and the eyeball. Words and numbers are flashing up in green on the screen without Rika pressing anything. You do a double-take, blinking at the screen over Rika's shoulder.
"Is that ... ?" You trail off.
Rinnosuke nods. "That's how we talk to it."

You step away from the computer screen and stand in front of the eyeball, but far enough back that the tentacles couldn't reach you even if they were moving. This thing makes the inside of your head crawl. It just looks so unnatural, like somebody pulled out a giant's eyeball.
The eye just swivels to watch you in total silence.

"Can it understand what we're saying?" You ask.
"Sure." Rika says. "But it has trouble working out meaning and stuff from words, so you have to be really simple and clear with it if you're not using the computer."
You raise a hand in greeting. "Hello Sigma?"
No response.
"Can't it say anything?" You ask.
Rika smirks at you. "Do you see a mouth anywhere?" She peers at the computer screen for a moment. "But Sigma says hello back."
"It speaks on there?" You ask. "It really said hello?"
"Well," she frowns. "No. It actually said 'Acknowledging vocalisation, greeting phrased as question, response: greet.' And some of that was in binary."
You raise an eyebrow at Rika. She shrugs.
"I didn't say it could speak good English yet." She says, then glances back at the screen again. "Now it's ... er ... laughing, I think."
"Fair enough." You say, looking into the eyeball again. "So what do I do now? You told me it can tell me my name."
"You just stand right there." Rika says, rummaging in the drawer under the desk.
"Ah ... Rika." Rinnosuke says, warning in his voice. "There's no need-"
"Oh calm down, just a precaution." She says.

She pulls a small pistol from the drawer and aims it at your head.

"Woah, woah!" You put your hands up. "What the fuck!?"
"Rika." Rinnosuke says. "He's fine, he's not tried anything."
"Sorry." Rika says. "But the last time we did this, I saw a person turn into a walking pillar of teeth and try to eat me. Nothing personal. If you're a person, cool, I'll put it down when Sigma finishes checking." She shrugs, keeping the pistol aimed at you while typing something on the keyboard with her other hand.

You keep your hands in the air. Rinnosuke gives you an apologetic look but you don't feel any better.

Because between the giant killer monsters that tried to kill us that we know they're hiding from, and the fact that the last time they brought a newcomer in they turned out to be some toothy monstrosity that tried to kill them all, they have good reason to be so wary of us.

Oh, and there's that whole "gun aimed right at your head" thing to consider. Generally not a good time to get snarky or irritate people, don't you think?
>> No. 80406

Keep in mind oni may never lie, but they aren't stupid either. A vague answer isn't lying after all. As long as we don't outright lie to Suika or Yuugi, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyways. Of course the same applies to them in regards to answering us, but eh. We could still at least ask them questions to see where they lead us, and if it boils down to it, challenge them to a fight. Assuming we win, they'd have more respect for us and probably be more willing to talk to us.

"Okay, just get this over with." You say to Rika. "I understand." You do, but you're still seething inside. How many times are you going to have to prove you're a real, flesh-and-blood person?
Rika half-smirks at you. "Didn't expect that. You can shout at me or whatever." She says. "Not just gonna shoot you, only if you start growing extra mouths or something when the result comes up."
You simply glare back at her.
"Look, I'll make 'ya a fuckin' cake afterwards to say sorry!" She says. "It's just a precaution."
"Is that a promise?" You ask, almost amused by Rika. "I get a cake every time you point a gun at me?"
"Yup. If you're real then you can eat it straight off my ass for all I care." She says, taking a glance at the computer screen.
"Is he ready?" Rinnosuke asks.
Rika nods. "Yup. Sing it out for us all, Sigma." She says to the giant eyeball, then winks at you. "This will feel sort of weird."
"What w-"

ONE FEMALE HUMAN

"Oh by the Gods what was that." You blurt out, resisting the urge to clutch at your forehead. Sigma didn't move an inch.
"Telepathic transmission." Rika says, grinning. "That's me Sigma's counting there."
Rinnosuke just winces and rubs his eyes.

HALF ONE MALE HUMAN

Rika nods, but she's visibly nervous.

HALF ONE MALE YOUKAI

Rinnosuke blinks. You see Rika's hand start to shake as she points the gun at you. The moment stretches out forever as you stare down the gun barrel.

ONE MALE ONI

Rika lets out a huge sigh and lowers the gun. "Okay, cool, you're an Oni, that's good." She puts the gun down on the desk and types something into the computer, trying to appear calm.
Rinnosuke steps over and pats you on the back. "Well done, and don't worry, she won't do that again."
"I will if he tries to eat me." Rika says over her shoulder.
