Faith. Justice. Protection. Hope. Strength. Courage. All this and more, the Empress of Mankind gave of herself to Gensokyo, the empire that encompasses all of humanity, that travels beyond the stars now. With her legendary forays, she has spread the remaining shreds of humanity from the small pocket land she once lived in, into the destroyed wastelands of Old Earth, to the ruined Mars bases, beyond the Solar System, to Alpha Centauri, and beyond, further, reuniting humans beyond, by peace when possible, by war when necessary (or when she was really, really annoyed). With the aid of the Kappa, technology was forged, guns, armor, ships, swords, shields, mighty war titans all made to fight off the aliens beyond the stars who would oppress humanity.

In those times, those times when Youkai were not monsters, traitors to be feared and hated, but were allies who lived alongside humanity in the great Gensokyon Empire, there was one force of the Empress that allowed her to overcome overwhelming odds of aliens who would seek to destroy humanity and men who would attempt to cast down her glorious dream of unified humans. One force, made of her flesh and blood, who share thinly of her barren womb. They whom cleansed the ruined Earth of the aliens that had conquered it, they who fought alongside the Empress to reclaim Tartarus, they who continue to this day to defend humanity, legends amidst legends. They are Gensokyo's Space Marines.

~

The Legacy of Defense has entered the Tigerus System. Border Shadow inbound, prepare for Centralization into Gensokyon space!” The feminine orders over the comm, the klaxon blazing, the sounds of hurried responses from Chapter Serfs wearing the crest of the Kindred of Hakurei, moving to prepare the boarding torpedoes to be launched into the threat the Strike Cruiser Legacy of Defense would soon be facing.

Not hours ago the ship had been notified of a distress call from the nearby Tigerus system. Tigerus was known for it's plentiful bounty of flora and fauna that was harvested and used to help create medicines and drugs for all aspects of the Empire. The Imperial Guard, the citizenry, even the Apothecaries used many indigenous plants and animals from this system to help fuel the medical aspects of the Empire. And now, a remnant of the horrid Tyranid fleet, Leviathan, would move to attack and absorb this system. Notified of this, Chapter Master Kanako sent the lone ship in the sector, the Legacy of Defense, and all forty of the marines on board, to fend off the tendril.

The odds are difficult, nay, are near impossible. To face a Tyranid fleet in space combat, with naught but eight ships of Battlefleet Calaxis and a strike cruiser would be nigh impossible. Of course, you knew your duty. Assigned to the Legacy of Defense, you have honed your skills, created by hundreds of campaigns, reinforced with training and faith.

A bit of an exercise in Inquisitor getting his groove back, trying to figure out how he wants the TH40k universe to run. I suppose it's a bit of a disappointment, but Mystia~ will have to wait a time for her hug.

Please, Anon, pick your Company. The marines aboard the Litanies of Defense are made of up a mix of reserve marines, so this will have a bearing on your tactics and actions when action comes into play. This game, bad-ends are far more possible, in more ways than one. You have a limited amount of allies, and your armor and equipment is precious. Your success or failure will affect the main storyline.

The Empress Protects.

[ ] Tenth Company: The Scouts, the Initiates, those who learn of the Chapter's Ways. Skilled in stealth, and in unconventional victories, scout marines favor the new, the innovative, the witty. Scout Marines also tend to be more 'human' than their fully marine siblings, and are less bound by Chapter teachings as far as maneuvers that most Marines would consider “Cowardly.” Scout Marines are able to hide from (most) units, have access to sniper rifles and demolition charges, and are more likely to succeed at write-ins, but have weaker armor and less support on the field due to the nature of their sneaking missions.

[ ] Ninth Company: Devastators, men and women who learn the arts of Danmaku: Bullet Hell, raining death on the enemy with superior firepower in the form of lasers, of waves of bullets, of missiles. Skilled in big guns. Require time to set up, and not as great in close-in fighting, but by the Empress, when you shoot you kill.

[ ] Eighth Company: Assault Squads, who bring the purifying blades and weapons to the fight against the enemies of Gensokyo. Excellent close-combat skill, and armed with bolt pistols and chainswords, those of the Eighth Company are beyond their allies in close combat. Unlike other squads, these close-combat techniques and skills make them able to sweep through squads that are even deeply entrenched, the benefits of superior positioning and heavy firepower made useless when a chainsword or powerfist rips through the enemy. Furthermore, superior speed allows you to move further and faster than most enemy units, allowing you to make hit and run attacks, whittle down chasing enemies, or slaughter any who try to escape your grasp.

[ ] Seventh Company: Tactical Marines, armed with the Bolter and with a bolt pistol. Generally more versatile, Tactical Marines are trained in all aspects of war equally, although they are tough, stubborn, and hard to kill. Practical in all things, Tactical Marines are adaptive. They have heavy firepower, able to access the weapons of the Devastators, and are skilled in close-ranged firefights. They may change equipment between battles, and are able to endure unbelievable punishment with no loss of morale, determination, or men. However, they have no truly masterful skill, and they would be wise to utilize their adaptability to the fullest. Jacks of all trades, masters of none.

[ ] First Company: The greatest heroes of the Chapter are of the First Company, and you are one of the five assigned to the Legacy of Defense. In the legendary suits of Tactical Dreadnought Armor (Popularly known as “Terminator” armor), forged with a shard of the Empress' own equipment, this armor makes the user virtually invincible to almost all forms of attack, even weapons able to normally destroy a vehicle at times. The armor is also phenomenally strong, able to utilize power weapons and tear apart bulkheads with power fists as well as fire heavy weaponry on the move. Terminator armor can even teleport, if need be. Furthermore, as elites of the Chapter, you are proven skilled beyond most others. However, there are only five of you: every death is painful, every lost marine a death to be mourned. When a squad member dies, your small squad size makes the loss more pronounced.

[ ] Other: Perhaps you are outside the most obvious Company organization: a Chaplain, a Librarian, or a dreadnought. These types of marines all fit into “Other.” What one can do will be dependent on your choice of unit.
-[ ] Chaplains are inspiring warriors, those well versed in the teachings and sayings of the great Empress, and all who hear his or her words are inspired into a frenzy. They are armed with badges of their office, a Rosarius which provides a protective force field, and a Power Mace with an Orb for a head, which can possibly bash through any armor, and their close-combat prowess is furious and violent. However, they automatically fail all write-ins, as their doctrines and learning prevents them from improvising.
-[ ] Librarians are magicians, those who weave magic learned and sanctioned to the Space Marines. A vast variety of powers are at their disposal, from being able to cast lightning bolts from their hands, to reading minds, to even protecting their allies or making himself a superior warrior in close quarters or at a range. They are armed with a Force Staff, a weapon that allows them a chance to instantly kill something they've wounded, and Mordenkainen's hood, a device which allows the dispelling of other magiks. However, every time a spell is cast, there is a chance that the magic will lash back, and what happens after is anyone's guess; a reverse effect, injury to you allies, self-injury or even death are all possible.
-[ ] Dreadnoughts are the ancient voices of the dead, Marines who are too injured to fight but yet still live are placed into life-support caskets, and are attached to these machines, large, powerful walking engines of death and destruction birthed of lost technology, able to be outfitted to any purpose. Heavy armor prevents small arms fire and weaker close-combat offenses to break their armor, and they are incredibly durable. However, they are highly vulnerable to dedicated anti-tank weapons. Such weapons can ruin a Dreadnought's day very, very quickly, and Dreadnoughts must be careful to avoid or destroy such attackers as soon as possible. Also involved are obvious problems: Dreadnoughts are not infantry, and have difficulty entering certain places or taking more minute actions.

Please bear patience for me: I swear I will write before the week is up once more. For now, vote and fight for the Empress, oh Anon, and do not let her down.

Kick serious amounts of ass this way, and then the reduced squad size also simplifies things in regards to the inevitable WHO DO I SHOW FEELINGS FOR?!?

I'm tempted to go for assault, but in the end, the defensive and offensive capabilities of the first company won out.

[X] Other: You are a Shrine Maiden of Battle, you bring the cleansing flame of the God Empress upon your enemies. And look hot while doing it.

You are not a Space Marine of the Kindred of Hakurei. No, no, you are a Shrine Maiden of Battle, one of the many women who have given their lives to fight in the God Empress' name, living through virtue and piety, your life a mix of prayer, training, and battle, all three sacraments to the Holy Empress herself, who was once a Shrine Maiden. The Shrine Maidens of Battle (Known to many as Battle Maidens) serve mostly though protecting pilgrims who travel throughout the Gensokyon Empire to worship and praise the Empress and Her exploits throughout the galaxy, slaying Xeno and traitor alike. However, the Maidens serve a second purpose, which lead to their founding.

Shrine Maidens of Battle are a militant arm of the Holy Inquisition, an organization founded in the wake of the Ultimate Betrayal for the purpose of ensuring that such a terrible rift and civil war never erupts in the Empire ever again. To this purpose Saint Maribelle, a woman of “Outsider” blood, a meaning lost to the test of time, assembled the billions of orphaned human young girls throughout the galaxy, and began to instill faith and training more fierce and brutal than that of any of the Imperial Army, forging from the women the honest, stubborn faith and steel that has eventually evolved into the current Maidens of Battle.

You are one of these women, brought to one of the many shrines throughout the Empire to be trained and taught of the God-Empress' glory, her splendor, her sacrifice. It is is in her service, that you and sixty of your Sisters have hastily assembled to join the Kindred of Hakurei, a Space Marine chapter of notable honor and Reputation in the Empire by Head Priestess Mokou, “The Flameberge of the Eientei System.” Famous and notable for her victories suppressing the Youkai infestation in Eientei's “Lost Six,” she was granted command of your strike force, and now under her command you stand ready to purge the alien Tyranids from this system.

Yes! In the glory of the God-Empress, every last piece of Xeno filth will be purged, and Her rule will stand before the purified land once more! On the eve of battle you find yourself filled with Rightious Fury, with Unmatched Zeal! No being short of a Space Marine is a match for your masterful training and elite skill! The God-Empress herself has granted your forces weapons and armor, bolstered your hearts with faith and resolve, protects your souls so that no Youkai may steal it from you! You are a Shrine Maiden of Battle, and the galaxy will be purified by the cleansing flame of fire and the whine of chainsword!

~

Pick a class, /others/. Remember, as you have given up your right to be a Space Marine, you gain powerful Faith abilities (to be disclosed later) but lose your strength in close combat and your durability. Shrine Maidens of Battle are not as tough or as strong in close combat as Space Marines are.

[ ] Celestians: Elites amongst the Sacred Order of the Righteous Brand's elites, you are a force to be reckoned with. Fueled with skill at the peak of human ability, and armed and armored with some of the most effective weapons humanity has to offer, there is little a Celestian squad is unable to do. Fire disciplined rounds of bolter fire at enemies, put whole groups of heretics to the flames, and even crush heretics in close combat through sheer hate. Celestians are deployed via drop pod onto the battlefield, and carry bolters armed with executor cartridges; small, portable, one-shot flamethrowers that allow for quick, brutal attacks at enemy squads, as well as the usual arsenal of special weapons, grenades, and close-combat weapons.

[ ] Seraphim: The adroit and aerial wing of the Righteous Brand's elites, these quick-response sisters take to the skies in their sacred armor with blessed winged packs, which have been known to inspire courage to fellow troops on the ground. Unlike Space Marine Assault Marines, Seraphim are nimble and light enough to use their packs to quickly disengage from combat in enemy lines if required. They come armed with two bolt-pistols, allowing for an array of akimbo boltgun shots on enemy heads, and some carry flamers, or inferno pistols instead. Their mid to long range capabilities leaves much to be desired, but the strength and determination of these sisters is not to be underestimated.

[ ] Retributors: Sisters armed with some of the heaviest weapons the Order has to offer, Retributors recreate the sacred art of Danmaku, also known as “Bullet Hell,” used since the ancient days of Gensokyo, the art of victory through superior firepower. A combination of faith and firepower allows the Retributor squad to unload not only wave after wave of bullets and melta beams, but also to be uncannily accurate with them, piercing even the toughest traitor's armor or the most stout armor's defenses. Retributors have superior ranged firepower to the other squads at a range, but this causes their close-combat skills to suffer, and they tend to be less responsive and quick as the other types of sister squads.

So, Celestians = generic all-rounders, Seraphim = mobile aerial units, Retributors = heavy weapons guys that suck at melee.
